ARMORY GYMNASTICS

Progressive gymnastics at the Armory describes the school-age child who is 6 and older.  When the children reach this point in the program, they are grouped by gender and organized more according to skill level as opposed to age (as in Developmental).  In progressive it is not uncommon to find a 7-year-old child practicing with a twelve year old.  The boys separate and move to their specific “Olympic” events and the girls rotate about their four events.

There are usually three basic stages in this level in the program:  beginner, intermediate, and advanced.  Where other programs might like to formally structure the testing processes and evaluation systems of their program, we feel that takes more time away from the children and exposes them to undue pressure to perform.   So we have an informal method of moving children that simply involves training the staff to recognize the necessary strengths and skills to advance and giving them the autonomy to move children within the program as they see fit.  Progressive gymnastics is simply and mostly about developing skills and strength.  Boys and girls work on the requirements for their first competitive levels as outlined by the USAG (USA Gymnastics), but not as many routines and without any pressure.

Progressive gymnastics is designed for those who might not be the enthusiast, but want the experience.  Progressive gymnastics is more fun than work.  Gymnastics can be very focused, disciplined and pressured (like any competitive sport), but not at this level.  Our mission and philosophy is to see progressive gymnasts through the recreational classes and into a competitive arena.  Some move quickly, where others move slowly.  Some never make it completely through, but that’s fine as long as they had fun and got what they wanted from the sport.  However they arrive or how long it took them is not important, what is paramount is that they are now at the next level in the program and sport:  competitive gymnastics.
